British music invasion this winter in LA

MUSIC fans will find plenty of British acts playing locally in the upcoming months, from giants like the Who performing Quadrophenia at the Staples Center on January 30th, to the more intimate music of singer-songwriter Jake Bugg, (one night only) at the Troubadour on January 16th. Here’s our roundup o f the best bets:

Jake Bugg at the Toubadour, 9081 Santa Monica Boulevard,West Hollywood. Wed. Jan. 16th. From the heart of Nottingham comes the precociously talented Jake Bugg, who discovered music through a Don McLean song he heard whilst watching the Simpsons, his is a very modern folk tale. With a musical diet consisting of Dylan, Glen Campbell, Wiz Khalifa and more, it’s eclectic as it is unique. For tickets click HERE

 

 TEIGNMOUTH’S own rock heroes Muse are touring in support of their sixth album The 2nd Law. Rolling Stone declared The 2nd Law to be Muse’s “biggest, craziest music yet.”

The UK-based trio is composed of Matt Bellamy, Dominic Howard and Chris Wolstenholme. Since forming in 1994, they have released five studio albums, altogether selling more than 15 million albums worldwide. The group’s 2009 album The Resistance reached Number 1 in nineteen countries around the world. They have won numerous awards including a Best Rock Album GRAMMY Award® and an American Music Award for The Resistance. In July 2012, Muse’s song “Survival” was adopted as the official song of the 2012 Olympic Games. On October 6th, the band performed two songs from The 2nd Law (the hit single “Madness” and “Panic Station”) on Saturday Night Live.  At the Staples Center on Wed. Jan. 23rd. For tickets click HERE.

AH, VIENNA: Midge Ure
THREE 1980s icons are out in full force at the El Rey Theatre on Sat. Jan. 26th as Midge Ure and Bow Wow Wow perform with support form Gene Loves Jezebel. Ure was the founder and main creative force behind Ultravox before hitting paydirt with “Do They Know It’s Christmas” for the Band-Aid project. Bow Wow Wow were punk Svengali Malcolm McLaren’s ‘other’ project after the Sex Pistols, and Gene Loves Jezebel are best known for their hit ‘Desire”. For tickets click HERE

 

And then there’s The Who. From 1960s mod icons to 1970s stadium rock giants, the Who are among the handful of truly great and enduring British rock bands. At the Staples center on Wed., Jan 30 from 7pm they will perform their iconic 1973 double album Quadrophenia in its entirety, along with a selection of Who classics. The critically acclaimed Quadrophenia, the band’s second rock opera (after Tommy), raised the bar for rock albums as an art form and hit #2 on the U.S. Billboard album chart.

Founding members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend will be joined by Zak Starkey (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), Simon Townshend (guitar/backing vocals), Chris Stainton (keyboards), Loren Gold (keyboards/backing vocals) and Frank Simes (musical director, keyboards/backing vocals). Emeli Sandé at the El Rey Theatre, 5515 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, on Wednesday, February 6th.  Glasgow’s rising singer/songwriter’s  powerful vocal style has already earned her two number one hits in the UK. Emeli Sandé was born in Sunderland, to a Zambian father and English mother in March of 1987. She moved to Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland when she was four where she was raised. .For tickets click HERE.
