Day of Rugby at Webster Middle School

picture-2Rugby fans can enjoy a day of the noble sport at Daniel Webster Middle School in West Los Angeles (11330 Graham Place, Los Angeles, CA 90064).  Open to the public.  No formal seating, just turn up, bring chairs and a picnic, and join in with the supporters on the sidelines.

Schedule: 9.30am-1.30pm: Play Rugby USA Children’s Tournament.

With a mission of “Developing Youth through Rugby”, Play Rugby USA hosts 30 middle school teams from various after school programs for the 2013 Los Angeles Cup.  Students from the After-School All-Stars, Beyond the Bell, Emerson and ICEF programs will be sporting uniforms representing two themes: The 22 boys teams will showcase clubs from the English Premiership, while the 8 girls teams will be representing the Pacific Nations.

This tournament will see grades 6-8 compete in several flag rugby matches, culminating in the various finals. Both Santa Monica Youth teams are undefeated in regular season play and winners of these matches advance to the So Cal Youth Rugby Championship on May 11th at Cal State University Fullerton.  More information at www.socalyouthrugby.org

2 pm: Santa Monica Rugby Club vs. East Palo Alto Bulldogs – After a successful regular season, our local men’s rugby club hosts Northern California rival in a USA Rugby round-of-32 playoff match.  Winner advances to the Sweet 16 in Dallas.

4 pm: Finish

6pm – 8pm: Invite-only reception hosted by HSBC at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel and Bungalows at the Bungalow in Santa Monica. Guest speakers and presentation of the BritWeek trophy to winning adult team from the afternoon session.
