Hello Ashes, goodbye Dame Barbara…

Hi Everyone:

What a week it has been! England retained the Ashes for a start! Craig and I also popped along to bid our current Consul-General, Dame Barbara Hay, a bon voyage. Dame Barbara’s four-year appointment has flown by and it’s really been a pleasure having her as part of the Brits in LA community.

We are very excited and honored to announce we finally have a winner for the photography competition we were hosting alongside British photographer Rankin, Heifer International and Talenthouse. The mission was to capture ‘hunger’ and what it meant to you. Rankin personally selected Daylon Soh and his submission “Alone in Hunger” (see below, left)- special mention must go to Peoples Choice, Tibor Galamb. Visit Talenthouse to view all the entries.

Our monthly Sunday Roast at the Pikey was a lot of fun – a great turn out and tons of new faces. Craig and I are going to try and do a tour of all the Sunday Roasts available around town, so drop us a line and let us know where your favourite is.

Engelbert Humperdinck at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank was an absolute delight, as was the venue. If you get an opportunity to check it out, you really must. It’s a gorgeous natural bowl nestled in the foothills of Burbank, and you can even bring wine and a picnic. The highlight of my evening was when Mr Humperdinck personally tweeted us after the show to thank Brits in LA for coming! He was one of my grandma’s absolute favourites, so it was extra special. We are also scheduled to see Phil Crosby Jr. perform at the Cicada Club on Olive Street in downtown this week. His grandfather Bing Crosby, was another one my gran adored so I think she would be very impressed with our outings this current week! Phil is giving away free CDs to anyone who mentions Brits in LA at the door, so make sure to grab yours if you are planning on attending. Tickets only $15 if you purchase in advance and 1920’s dress encouraged!

The Brits in LA football team The BLAggers are recruiting. Tryouts start immediately, so if you are over 30 and think you can keep up with the lads in the LA premiere league, drop them a line at lablaggers@gmail.com . You must be 30 by 2014 to qualify.

Another highlight of the week saw Craig and I at the BAFTA/LA screening of the new Alan Partridge film “Alpha Papa”. It was brilliantly funny and inappropriate – which was what the audience were hoping for – and no one left disappointed. Unfortunately the film doesn’t currently have any US distribution so unless any of you know “a man who can” (help) you will have to wait for the dvd to come out – or perhaps make a trip to the UK?

We are also very excited to have British writer Frederick Forsyth (The Day of the Jackal) coming to town on August 20th, courtesy of the Writers Bloc. Ticket info is available through their website. A few of us are planning on attending, so come and say hi if you are going too.

September 7th we are planning to attend the 7th Annual Polo Fundraiser benefiting Safety Harbour Kids. It is guaranteed to be a fantastic day out, with wine tastings, high tea as well as the match itself of course! I can’t help but automatically think of Lysander Hawkley – how many of you remember him!?

Don’t forget our pub crawl is next week and as always we have Breakfast Club on a Tuesday sponsored by Next Stop LAX. For full details on all our events please visit our website or Facebook page. If you need more information on anything I have mentioned don’t hesitate to contact us at info@britsin.la

Thats all for this week…

Cheers, Eileen & Craig
