Meet cabaret singer and actress Jenny Eloise Rieu, originally from Paris, who moved to Los Angeles three years ago.
Was there a particular reason you chose LA?
Yes, I graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts of New York in 2010, where I trained for the Theater. A month later I was all packed up and ready to move to L.A. I really wanted to do more Film and Television and L.A is the mecca for it.
What one thing do you miss from home?
I miss food a lot as you can imagine, obviously we are kind of known for having great delicacies! And I also miss the feel of walking in the city of Paris at night.
What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus France?
You know I’m French Parisian, so we are naturally pessimistic and for me it’s a fresh breath of air to see how everything is possible here in L.A, if you set your mind on it. I meet a lot of entrepreneurs on a daily basis. That’s the biggest difference between living in L.A versus Paris. I don’t feel restricted as far as launching new businesses and people are so supportive. That’s a wonderful feeling!
Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?
I have lots of them. But I will pick one. Since I’m very much into vintage as you already know, I have to let you know about the ” Ladies Night Out ” that happens every last Friday of the month in Burbank on Magnolia Boulevard. Everything that they sell is true vintage or vintage reproduction. And a special shout-out to Pinup Girl Clothing for their amazing selection of clothes and their always very friendly staff.
What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?
I would say that they need to really sort out the paperwork first. That’s something I’ve learnt the hard way. You really want to make sure that you have all your work permits sorted before coming here. Also, come with an open-mind, leave your fears at the door and approach people with a positive attitude and support your community. You will find that doors will open for you eventually. I also want to add that the Brits in LA, is the first community of people that made me feel welcomed to L.A. I joined the group three years ago, I was one of the only French in the group and I have made some wonderful British and non-British friends. So I am thankful!
