Hello Breeps!
Halloween used to be for kids….well not anymore and definitely not in LA! Kids better watch their candy, especially at The Brits in LA second Dead British party sponsored by VW Santa Monica and Beltran Brito Immigration Attorneys. It was a raving success – the entry fee got you a free cocktail, a lucky dip prize, pizza slices from Lucifers and more candy than Willy Wonka’s factory. At one of Hollywood’s hottest bars – Bar Lubitsch – ‘Plastic Love’, our favourite DJs of the year spun the most amazing party choons – From “Thriller” to Snap’s “I got the Power” – I love a good throwback number! And in usual tradition Eileen and I got to gender-bend (in costumes) – she was a delectable Dennis the Menace – (the Brit one from the comic book ‘The Beano’) while I opted for a luscious ‘hairy’ Liz Taylor. One of our latest obsessions to have at our parties is the amazing photo booth company ‘Barebox’. It takes an image every 5 seconds, so captures everything and anything. Then they edit for you and select 300 or so of the best images and share directly on to social media… genius!
As always many thanks to our volunteers Lorraine Wilkinson, Claudia Frances and Ewan Chung. Our best-dressed winners were Heath Deatherage and Felicity Wren, chosen by Bar Lubitsch manager Aaron. Needless to say training with ’Your Body By Design’ in the morning wasn’t very fun. And thanks to all the Brits in LA female members on the best tips to remove eye make-up in the morning – Vaseline with a Q-Tip was the winner (just in case you need to know boys!)
Key events…
Other events for our ‘Key members’ this week included an interesting panel discussion with Beatles memorabilia collectors hosted by Esquire Magazine. Did you know a signed red album cover (Beatles 1962-66) can fetch up to $10,000? We also had a couple of free screenings of “Bad Grandpa” and “The Book Thief” and “Made of Stone”, the eagerly-anticipated Stone Roses movie directed by fellow Nottingham lad, Shane Meadows. To join our key-members club, visit our website for more details www.britsin.la
On Tuesday night we co-hosted a fabulous get-together with British Equity for our acting members at The Pikey hosted by member John Pirkis and Oscar-winning stuntman Vic Armstrong, who gave a speech on the importance of unions and how British Equity can help members living and working in the USA as well. If you are interested in becoming a member or renewing a lapsed membership check out their website http://www.equity.org.uk/home/ for more information.
Is there a Doctor Who in the house? Well, not literally, however we do have a former cast member, Tessa Shaw from the episode ‘Spearhead from Space’. Tessa played a UNIT officer in Jon Pertwee’s doctor run. So join us on Nov 23rd for a special Doctor Who event hosted by The Cat and Fiddle pub and presented by our very own Sandro Monnetti – Tickets are only $15 which includes entry and a free drink. Come celebrate the 50th anniversary in the company of your fellow Whovians by watching a live broadcast of the anniversary episode ‘The Day of the Doctor’ at an out-of-this-world screening event. Featuring Dalek-table drinks, Extermin-ales and Cyber-snacks along with Time Lord trivia and a costume contest. Tickets are available at www.drwho.eventbrite.com.
We also checked out a very British public house called The Churchill (8384 W. 3rd street, in the Midcity. Named after our beloved Prime Minister, Winston. They have an incredible happy hour of $4 beers and wine and a great little happy hour menu, including scrumptious Pork meatballs – which are a must.
If you are thinking of catering your dinner for Thanksgiving this year, take a look at hiring a British chef. Marcus Laird owns Feast Catering and Eileen and I recently had the opportunity to sample his wares. Mini Yorkshire puds with roast beef and horseradish, Fig and cheese brochettes, sliced duck on frittatas, braised short ribs on root mash. Just really amazing! He can cater anywhere, from a small intimate dinner at home right up to wedding parties for hundreds. etc… check out his website at www.feastcatering.com.
And finally…we also have a very special offer for you to see Matthew Bourne’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ – the two-time Tony Award® and five-time Olivier Award-winning choreographer sets his sights on the third and final Tchaikovsky masterwork, re-imagining Sleeping Beauty as a gothic romance complete with fairies and vampires, enchanting and arresting scenery and costumes, all in a fully immersive surround sound experience. This fabulous event runs Novemer 21-29. Special savings of up to 30% on select performances can be snagged by visiting www.centertheatregroup.org/sleep and use promo code SLEEP.
Have a great week Breeps and see you at one of upcoming events or in a fortnight on these very pages…!
