THE VENERABLE Mayflower Club in North Hollywood will be hosting a Robert Burns celebration on Sunday, January 19th in conjunction with the Celtic Arts Center. In honor of Scotland’s greatest poet food and drink will be served, including a whisky toast, as well as entertainment, reading of Burns’ poetry, dancing and a good Scottish time. Doors open at 5pm and the event begins at 6pm. The cost is $15 for Celtic Arts Center and Mayflower club members, and $20 for non-members. Make your reservations now.
Also upcoming at the Mayflower Club is their popular annual panto. This year it is Little Jack Horner, which opens Sat. January 25th at 8pm and plays for four additional performances through Sat. Feb. 8th. Audience members can boo the villains and cheer the heroes, laugh at the corny jokes and enjoy all the fun of a traditional British panto. And it’s all in a good cause too, because the show is the year’s major fund raiser for the club, which has been serving the local British expat community since it was founded in 1965 by Pat and Frank Jackson and Eileen and Tom Selby. The Club served as a gathering place for British expatriates living in the San Fernando Valley and surrounding areas, to meet and have fun in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual support. The predominantly English clientele of the early years has now evolved to include participants from many other cultural backgrounds, and those that simply enjoy good company and “things British”.
The Mayflower club is located at 11110 Victory Boulevard. Tel: 818-769-9805 or email: mayflowerclub@gmail.com.
