In Cardiff this week, actress Jenna Coleman was seen emerging from the TARDIS before an emotional first embrace with telly’s new Doctor Who Peter Capaldi during filming.
And after months of only tiny drips of information on Capaldi’s incarnation as the 12th Doctor – we’ve seen pictures of him in Matt Smith’s old costume and in a puffy white shirt – the BBC has released the first photo of him in his Time Lord costume with Capaldi wearing a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt and black boots.
Like his predecessor, played by Matt Smith, the new Doctor is a pretty slick dresser. He steers short of the half-mast skinny trousers worn by 31-year-old Matt, but the navy chinos show that the cadaverous pin-up definitely still has it at the age of 55.
The classic Dr Martens brogues add to the youthful, hipster edge, suggesting that this Doctor could be a real rebel.
Just like the announcement that the Thick Of It actor was to become the 12th Time Lord, this outfit is surprising but somehow just works.
Coleman’s Clara Oswald, pictured stepping out of the Doctor’s trusty blue box was wearing a navy blue cardigan and short tartan skirt as she hugged the regenerated Time Lord.
Hinting at the dynamic union between the duo, Capaldi’s Doctor can be seen responding to Clara’s hug by awkwardly flailing his arms and then clenching his fists.
Speaking about Capaldi taking over from Smith, Coleman said at the recent National Television Awards: “[Peter is] great – of course, we all know he’s going to be wonderful.
“It’s been great to get up on our feet and get started – we just seem to have taken off like a rocket.”
Head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat has penned Doctor Who’s eighth series premiere, which will be directed by Kill List and A Field in England filmmaker Ben Wheatley.
Earlier this month, Capaldi was pictured on the back of a horse in the dramatic first on-set photographs.
Doctor Who will return to BBC One in late 2014.
