Big congrats to my man Pete Tong… The Radio 1 host and legendary Essential Mix presenter was honoured with an MBE this week by Prince William for a career in broadcasting and music that has seen him launch a record label and become an in-demand producer.
Tong’s name has also passed into the language as rhyming slang – with the phrase “it’s all gone Pete Tong” used to describe a mishap, or “all gone wrong”.
After receiving the award during an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace, the 53-year-old who relocated to Los Angeles from the UK last year said a fanzine first used the phrase “as an affectionate slap around the head”.
He said: “it just stuck and has turned into an amazing legacy. I’ve never had a problem with it and I count myself lucky to be recognised in this way.”
It was also used as the name of a comedy film in 2004 where a DJ realises he is becoming deaf.
Veteran and well-respected DJ Tong laughed: “The movie obviously was great fun.
“Why run away from something that’s so catchy so I use I use it as my brand really when I do parties around the world.”
Speaking about his career, Tong said: “I’ve been standing here for a few hours waiting to do this and still have to pinch myself. I’ve spent my career doing something I love, playing records.
“There are so many worthy people here today, I feel quite humbled by all the servicemen, policemen and the charity workers and people like that.
“So I count myself lucky to be recognised in this way.”
Well done Pete… What an honor!
