Meet a Member: David Minkin

Meet David Minkin from Northridge, California who stayed in LA to pursue magic for television. David recently starred on Travel Channel’s “Magic Outlaws” as well as MTV’s “Room 401”.

david-minkinWas there a particular reason you chose to move back to LA?

I’ve lived elsewhere, but LA is an ideal place for a magician.  Between the Magic Castle in Hollywood and the TV industry, the city draws a lot of magicians from around the world.  It would be hard for me to live somewhere else at this point, since I have an ongoing show in Hollywood.

You have spent time in the UK , what is the one thing you could bring back to LA?

Los Angeles is my home, but after spending time in London, I miss the public transit and the architecture.

What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus the UK?

The average person in the U.K. is born with an innate sense of humor, and they tend to use it often.  That’s why I love hanging with Brits.  As for people in Los Angeles, they are unique, even in comparison with the rest of America.  People tend to come here to live out their aspirations in television or film. There is an unusually high number of actors, who tend to be highly creative, yet at times, they can be immersed in their artistic paths and often flakey.  Still, there are plenty of decent, kind, and considerate people in LA.  Collect as many as you can, like a squirrel gathering nuts for the winter…which, by the way, will never come.  It’s always sunny here.

Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?

I know of many hidden gems in LA. The Magic Castle in Hollywood is one of them.  It’s a private invitation-only magic club inside an old Victorian mansion.  If you can get an invite, I highly recommend it.  I also enjoy the Foundation Room located inside the House of Blues with its tapestries and hand-carved statues.  Downtown, I would recommend Perch LA or the rooftop of the Ace Hotel.  In the valley, Firefly is my favorite.  And, in Hollywood, I love the Roosevelt Hotel and Bardot Hollywood where I host my Magic & Wine events.  The club is located inside the historic Avalon Theater (yes, we have some buildings in LA that would qualify as historic.)  The Magic & Wine events at Bardot combine an hour of wine and hors d’oeuvres followed by a 90-minute show.  It’s a good date night.

What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?

Please come!  We need all the Brits we can get.  LA is a dynamic city with a myriad of opportunities.  Dream big, but also be ready to work to make a dream come true.

Lastly, how can we find you on the Internet?
