SPRINGTIME is blooming in the City of the Angels and bringing with it some excellent live music from up-and-coming (and established) musicians, with a bumper crop of talent from across the pond playing locally over the next few weeks.
British trip-hop trio London Grammar come to the El Rey Theatre on March 25th. Comprising Hannah Reid, Dan Rothman and Dominic ‘Dot’ Major, who met at Nottingham University, London Grammar’s music has been described as “a blend of ambient, ethereal and classical sounds” with “melancholy guitar, soaring vocals and plaintive lyrics.”
Also in town next week are the young Irish four-piece rock & roll band The Strypes, who hail from Cavan. The band’s music owes much to 60s blues and 70s pub rock bands with more than a hint of The Stones, Dr Feelgood and Eddie and Hot Rods in their music. The band were formed in 2011 and consist of Ross Farrelly (lead vocals/harmonica), Josh McClorey (lead guitar/vocals), Pete O’Hanlon (bass guitar/harmonica) and Evan Walsh (drums). The Strypes perform Monday, March 31st at the El Rey Theatre.
Four days later (April 4th) the same venue hosts Dan Croll, the Newcastle-born singer-songwriter who moved to Liverpool when he was 18 to attend the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). While at LIPA, he won the national Songwriter of the Year award from the Musicians Benevolent Fund and was one of eight students picked to have a one-to-one with LIPA founder Sir Paul McCartney. He is currently signed to Turn First Records.
If Indie/alternative music is your thing, check out the London-based Fanfarlo at the Troubadour in West Hollywood on March 25th. And finally for die-hard rockers, there’s always those icons of heavy metal, Motorhead, performing at Club Nokia on April 11th.
Not quite music but definitely in the category of interesting British performance artist, Stephen Merchant, longtime collaborator with Ricky Gervais and recently creator and star of his own HBO Show, Hello Ladies, will be in conversation with Jeff Karlin (best known for playing Larry David’s hapless agent in Curb Your Enthusiasm) at the Largo at the Coronet on Wed. March 26th. Tickets priced at $30.
