Gary Oldman, speaking his mind…and keeping it real

 Hi Everyone:

Gary Oldman, one of the more famous Brits in LA, hit the headlines this week for being rather outspoken. I don’t necessarily agree with everything he said, but I admire his honesty and bluntness. A rare commodity in this town (as Mr Oldman points out). I come across so many people who are apprehensive to present their real selves. They embellish their achievements or are too afraid to have an opinion, possibly in fear of it affecting their social standing or career.

There is a fine line between blowing your own trumpet and creating a fantasy world. Through Brits in LA we get to meet so many characters from all walks of life. Nine times out of ten the most successful or amiable people I meet downplay their achievements and are rarely embarrassed to mention their struggles, low points or humble beginnings. It’s an ongoing beef  outsiders have with Los Angeles, hence the nickname ‘LALA Land’!

I do think it is time for a shake-up. No one is perfect and in fact it can be quite comforting to discover that your fellow Angelenos are not living in Disneyland either.  A few years ago a friend reached out to me and confessed all was not as I suspected, as fabulous as it seemed. This gave me the opportunity to help them out. Once their facade had evaporated they not only went on to achieve all the things they had claimed to do, but they actually became a nicer happier person. It’s a lot of pressure and effort to keep up with the Joneses so why not put that energy into being you (warts and all)?

I am happy to report most of our members do follow this ideology – so if you are planning to come along to one of our events Keep it Real or Trill; which I only recently learned means True and Real rather than singing like a bird!

The World Cup may be over for England but we are still supporting USA. The Cat & Fiddle, The Fox & Hounds and both Kings Head pubs (Studio City and Santa Monica) are showing all the games. Pub Quiz at The Pikey is on as usual every Tuesday – you never know who will attend. Last week Drew Carey popped in to draw the raffle for us! Our Breakfast Club is also every week and watch this space for our big Summer event!

Drop us a line at info@britsin.la if you have any questions or comments , we always love to hear from you.

Cheers!

Eileen
