Back to school and summer is over – except for those of us who live in ‘no season’ Los Angeles. Whatever the date we can wear white during, before, and after Labor Day. We are probably one of the only places in the USA that often gets confused as to whether the upcoming holiday weekend is Labor Day or Memorial Day, the rest of the country can use the weather outside to judge the occasion.
Labor Day to me means that LA is due to celebrate a birthday – this year being the ripe old age of 233 on September 4th! Happy Birthday Los Angeles!!
Apparently to the majority of the country it means approximately seven billion hot dogs will have been eaten since July 4th! Make that seven billion and one, thanks to the Greek Theatre who have Pink’s Hotdog available on site. Between you and me they aren’t that great, so don’t feel bad if you can’t face the extremely long wait. Although, Orson Welles may disagree as he apparently consumed 18 Pink’s hotdogs in one sitting. That’s nothing to boast about, seeing as he died of a heart attack. LA is a funny place as any association is seen as better than none – Pink’s other claim to fame is “Bruce Willis proposed to Demi here”, well that worked out well too didn’t it? Jokes aside – Pink’s are worth a visit just so you too can be in the in-crowd and say ‘they aren’t that great’.
Back to the 80s
My visit to the Greek Theatre this week wasn’t solely for the food – I was lucky enough to snag a ticket for the 80’s Retro Futura Tour, featuring China Crisis, Howard Jones, Tom Bailey of the Thompson Twins and the star of the show, Scotsman Midge Ure. I think the Killers may well have got some of their inspiration from him. What a wonder! I was hoping to catch up with him after the show and ask, among other things, if his vote was a YES or a NO in the upcoming Scottish Independence referendum but unfortunately he was too busy signing cd’s for diehard fans.
The YES vote has jumped up to 47% with only 2 weeks to go – is this another trick question? A bit like when people voted on Gay Marriage here in California in 2008 and for once a Yes meant No? I don’t want Scotland to leave the United Kingdom but I am very proud that we can have discussions, referendums and votes on our political future, unlike so much of the world!
On a lighter note, if you are an 80’s fan you must check out the book Mad World: An Oral History of New Wave Artists and Songs That Defined the 1980s , a real blast from the past. (See Sandro Monetti’s review on page 8)
Dead British
As always we have lots of events coming up, where you get the chance to meet other Brits as well as the gorgeous (and Italian) Maria Elena, who is this week’s featured Meet a Member. Don’t forget to save the date for Halloween, October 31st. We will be hosting our annual Dead British Party: for costumes think Margaret Thatcher or Black Pudding, both dead British.
If you have any questions or comments don’t hesitate to drop me a line at eileen@Britsin.LA
I always love to hear from you.
Cheers!
Eileen
