The long-awaited movie version of Absolutely Fabulous is finalizing its casting choices as we speak…

AbFabAnd, I’m told, the original cast will return to the award-winning comedy. The show’s writer and star Jennifer Saunders (AKA Edina Monsoon) has just declared that the entirety of the show’s original cast will reprise their roles in the film adaptation, and hopefully every star who ever made a cameo appearance in the show’s five-season run will be in the film.

The show has attracted numerous stars in cameo roles, from Oscar-winners to pop icons to fashion legends. Among those who have graced Ab-Fab are Helena Bonham Carter, Whoopi Goldberg, Elton John, ex-Spice Girl Emma Bunton, Debbie Harry, Suzy Quatro, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Christian LaCroix, Stella McCartney, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, and Twiggy.

“I haven’t got the storyline completely sorted out yet,” Saunders said of the new film, “but I want to cast everyone who has ever been in the show in it.”

Ab-Fab also starred Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, June Whitfield and Jane Horrocks. Set in the world of fashion PR the series saw Saunders as Edina Monsoon, a heavy-drinking, drug-abusing PR agent who spends her time chasing bizarre fads in a desperate attempt to stay young and “hip”. Magazine editor Patsy Stone (Lumley), her best friend and enabler, whose drug abuse, alcohol consumption, and promiscuity far eclipse Edina’s comparatively mild self-destructive behavior, joins Edina in her quest.

There were just (just!) 39 episodes of Ab Fab, that with its a veritable croissant of layers and buttery casting, represented the meaning of the show itself: Great Britain, fashion, and celebrity, being a woman, being a mother, a daughter.

Given the years of rumors surrounding a potential Absolutely Fabulous movie, it’s probably best to take whatever Saunders says about it with a sip of a martini… But the latest round is definitely the most promising.

Either way, cheers to Saunders for keeping on keeping up with the film idea… here’s hoping we’ll all be heading to a theater to see it around this time next year.

Oo-er… I just wet myself with excitement!
