FKA Twigs holds sold out concerts, has a cool sense of style, and is dating British star Robert Pattinson – and with all that comes an ugly side of fame.
The singer-songwriter, who was born Tahliah Debrett Barnett and hails from Gloucestershire, has been the target of racism and threats since it became apparent that she was romantically involved with Pattinson, best known for his work in the Twilight movies.
In a new interview, Twigs said that she’s glad to be dating the actor.
Nonetheless, despite the hordes of paparazzi following her every step and the “14-year-old” haters who “should be in bed”, Twigs says that it’s all “very worth it”.
“I really enjoy the fun of putting something out and people liking it or hating it or talking about it,” she told USA Today, “but vacuous attention, it feels disgusting. It’s like a hangover.”
However, “the positivity that I get from (my relationship) makes the more challenging aspects … very worth it.”
But dating one of the most beloved actors in the world isn’t easy. Between that and all the attention surrounding her rising fame, Twigs has had to deal with an ugly amount of backlash – including racist remarks and death threats via Twitter.
Twigs said, “Recently, people said horrible things about something I had no control of, which was tough.”
She adds, “I never really saw anything wrong with how I looked, it was more that certain people pointed things out to you about yourself. Either your hair’s different, or the colour of your skin, or your features.
“Half of my life I’ve had people staring at me because they think I’m funny-looking and ugly. The other half of my life I’ve had people staring at me because they think I’m fascinating.”
On her debut album, FKA Twigs explores heartbreak and reveals raw emotions, about which she said, “You try to do something, and it makes you feel disgusted in yourself.
“Whether it’s loving someone, trying to make music or trying to finish something and it’s painful, you’re constantly confronted with your lack of skill level, or you’re trying to love someone and you’re confronted with all the demons you have.”
Oo-er…
Still, Twigs loves fashion—even if not everyone understands her sense of style. “I’ll go shopping and I’ll be like, ‘I want to buy this,’ and they’re like, ‘You don’t really,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah… Then I’ll wear it, and they’ll be like, ‘Oh, actually, that’s cute. Can I borrow it?’”
So, whether you listen to her music (LP1) or know her because of her sexy ex-vampire boyfriend, FKA Twigs undeniably has the potential of becoming one of 2015’s biggest new artists, and it isn’t down to having RPattz as a boyf’!
