Meet Jazz from London who moved to LA, last month to move in with her girlfriend and get cracking with work.
Was there a particular reason you chose LA?
I first visited LA in 1992, 17, and I loved it. However, my heart belonged in New York. I would always visit there and never came back to LA. There was always a Broadway show luring me to spend time in NYC over LA.
Anyway, all that changed when I got into a long distance relationship, and my girlfriend lived here. I visited as often as I could. This past Summer I spent three months here and really fell in love with it. I assimilated. My girlfriend made me love LA, showing me things from a non-touristy point of view.
What one thing do you miss from home?
I tend to get cravings for Ribena in a carton. Go figure. I think that’s about the only thing I really miss. Well, my friends, I miss them, but that’s a given. Aside from that, I don’t really miss much. Sweets, chocolate? No, because I’ve always loved the American candy and all those E’s they put in their sweets. I also miss the West End. As a musical theatre lover, I love all the shows we have, and being able to randomly go to the theatre when you want, and just having the choice of so many great shows.
What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus London?
The biggest difference? Public transport. I live in London and we use transport to go everywhere, we also walk around a lot in London. LA lacks a good public transport system. Everyone here uses a car, and no one walks. My first weekend here, I walked five miles from West Hollywood to Beverly Hills and it was great, weaving in and out of the streets. It’s something we take for granted back home. I also find that the city dies down after dark, restaurants close early, people go to bed early. It’s not a late night city…
Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?
Food wise – Toi! Nigella Lawson recommended it on Twitter and it’s great Thai….rock n roll style. Also Son Of A Gun – the linguine is to die for! Plus Fryman Canyon. Go there. Everyone hikes on Runyon. Fryman is a much nicer hike and less busy. The view from Fryman is also really nice.
What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?
I would say do it. Do your research, it’s a great city with lots of wonderful opportunities. Learn to drive…the weather is unbeatable, they consider it cold here when it’s 72 degrees. What’s not to love?
