Meet Bazza J Holmes. He moved his photography business from London to Los Angeles 13 years ago.
Was there a particular reason you chose LA?
It’s almost like LA chose me. My first trip to the US was to LA in ’92. I was Time Out magazine’s staff photographer. They sent me to photograph Van Halen in a rehearsal studio in Burbank and at The Whiskey A Go-Go on Sunset. I was 21 years old on assignment, driving a T-top rental car along Sunset Blvd. listening to Hotel California. It was a great first taste of this sprawling collection of neighborhoods. While I didn’t immediately connect with the city, it certainly hooked my attention. After a motorcycle accident and multiple trips to the sun, I realized I could live here and my leg didn’t need to worry too much about forecasting the rain.
What one thing do you miss from home?
Naturally my family, but outside of that big miss, I have an odd one for you. The US boasts about its power as a world leader with their Constitution, big cars and large servings of food. However, they run a measly 110-120 volts out of their regular wall sockets. In the UK I could run a bunch of 2k lights on any property I rent for a shoot due to our much more capable 220-240 volts. You’d think that the US would puff up and run 480 Volts.
What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus Hoxton, London.
While I lived in a loft in London, the biggest difference might still apply. Generally we have a bathroom for each bedroom along with built in closets, rather than wardrobes, which never seem big enough.
Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?
While it’s not quite hidden, I have a favorite view which everyone should look from, behind the Hollywood sign. Seeing LA from here is a vast contrast to any view you may find, be it from the Dolby Theatre, Beachwood Canyon or Griffith Park.
