MEET A MEMBER: Alexandra Afryea hails from Nottingham, England and moved to LA in 2014 to pursue her acting and producing career.
How did you hear about Brits in LA?
A few of my friends live in LA and told me about BLA about three years ago, so I joined online. I remember seeing invites for Brits Breakfast and The Toscars thinking, ‘I want to be a part of that’, well I just completed my first Toscars short as an actor and producer and I had a blast!
What one thing do you miss from home?
I miss my family and my fiancé, but I’ll be heading back home soon to marry him, but I’ll be back! I also miss how excited everyone gets when the sun comes out!
What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus Nottingham?
The sunshine, obviously, and also the opportunities; LA is very open-minded and collaborative, or perhaps that’s just the people I hang with.
Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?
My good friend told me about the SAG Foundation, a place that is very supportive of actors. I also give back by being part of their Book Pals program.
What does community mean to you?
Community is being a part of something that has your back – a true support network. You can call upon people and likewise, be called upon. It’s home away from home, and for some, a better alternative! Thank you guys for this amazing community here at Brits in LA, it’s truly fabulous.
What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?
Do your research into agents, managers, buying cars, etc. and save, save, save because you are limited to the work you can do on an O1 visa and there are a lot of hidden costs in this industry, which are different to the industry in the UK. Also come with your best self – the attitude here is different to the UK so don’t be afraid to let people know who you are – just back up the goods!
