British star Hayley Atwell has contributed to the long-running debate over whether the Doctor in Doctor Who should be a woman by indicating that she would be keen to play the timelord.
In a Twitter Q&A session the actress, who currently appears as Peggy Carter in the Marvel series Agent Carter as well the Captain America films and Avengers: Age of Ultron, was asked by a fan whether she would like to appear in the BBC sci-fi series. “I’d like to BE Doctor Who,” Atwell replied.
Oo-er!
While Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has been ambivalent about the prospect of a female Doctor both Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman recently called for a female Doctor at San Diego’s Comic-Con festival last month.
Coleman said at Comic-Con, “I’m sure it will happen at some point. I think it’s just about casting the right actor.”
‘Doctor Who’ author AL Kennedy controversially remarked that she has absolutely no desire for the character to be played by a woman.
I quite agree, I love Hayley Attwell…but ‘our’ Doctor should never be played by a woman!
