Musings on Marmite, music…and cheese

A BIG thank you to everyone who wrote in telling me where to buy Red Leicester cheese locally – it seems everywhere from Whole Foods to select Ralphs/Pavilions carry it. Ye Olde Kings Head in Santa Monica also have it in stock along with many other British cheeses. So that is one less thing for Craig to bring back from the UK for me! I quite fancy trying the ‘Cornish Pasty Scotch Egg’ that Tesco’s have just launched though (hint hint!).

bila-marmite     Did you know that Marmite is the second most confiscated food item at London City Airport? Clever old Marmite cashed in on this recently published fact by issuing a 70g travel jar; which meets the official allowance standards for hand luggage. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the confiscated food items at the airport are not wasted, but given to a local food bank – perhaps Marmite should consider donating a jar every time a travel size is purchased… or maybe the food bank recipients are rather relieved? Which camp are you in Love It or Hate It?

One of my favourite British imports which can’t be packed into a suitcase has to be the music – there currently seems to be a great revival of old and a fantastic influx of new British bands playing in Los Angles this year – we have had visits from Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, The Rolling Stones, The Vamps and many more. If you are a music fan make sure to visit our Facebook page (which can also be found via www.Britsin.LA) as we have partnered up with concert promotor Goldenvoice. The Who, Motorhead, Rita Ora, Public Image Ltd, The English Beat and Paul Weller, are just a few of the acts that Brits in LA members have won tickets to recently. Next time it could be you… but you’ve got to be in it to win it!

Big congratulations to our Pub Quiz at the Pikey winners this week, who were topically named “Wear Black for Cilla’.  Our host Sandro Monetti awarded the runners-up Disney prizes from his recent jaunt to D23 Disney Convention. Our next quiz is on September 8th – visit our website for all the info. We can even find a team for you if you are coming alone – it’s a great way to meet new people. As is our weekly Brit Breakfast Club presented with Air New Zealand. If you are planning to join us over the next few weeks please make sure to check our website first, as there will be a venue change.  Our usual home, Cecconi’s is having a bit of a revamp and will not be open weekday mornings (still open for lunch and dinner though!), so make sure to check in with us before you head over.

Lastly a big shout-out to those of you who have been doing your bit for the drought – Mayor Garcetti announced this week that we are surpassing our targets and water usage is down by 21% for this time of year, so keep up the good work. That means you too, Tom Selleck!

Cheers!

Eileen
