British star Carey Mulligan has got a key new ally to help her through the early days of motherhood…none other than multiple Oscar winner Meryl Streep.
Oo-er!
The 30-year-old actress, who is currently promoting her new movie “Suffragette”, gave birth to her baby daughter Evelyn earlier this month but has been struggling to balance her new role as a mother with her globe-trotting career.
While many mothers in the U.K. and U.S. have at least three months maternity leave, Mulligan and her newborn baby, Evelyn Grace, were nudged early from the domestic nest at a mere five weeks.
There are downsides to being a movie star after all, apparently, including unmovable publicity obligations. Fortunately, the Oscar-nominated actress and her newborn have been accompanied around the globe during their Suffragette P.R. duties by co-star Meryl Streep, the infallible Oscar winner and mother of four. And on Monday evening, Mulligan revealed the extent to which Streep has been helping her through new motherhood.
While accepting an award at Elle’s Women in Hollywood event on Monday, Mulligan admitted to the audience that “the last couple of weeks have been pretty stressful, telling Vanity Fair: “Doing press and doing it with a tiny baby, timing has been very important and babies do what they want, which is a challenge,” Mulligan continued. “But it’s really helpful when you have Meryl Streep backstage at events shouting at people on your behalf – telling them to hurry the hell up because you have a nursing mother here.”
After Streep presented Mulligan with the award, the new mother turned to her co-star and said, “This is a massive pinch-me moment . . . I think it’s safe to say that there’s not a woman here tonight who doesn’t hold you in the absolute highest esteem.”
Streep returned the praise in her opening remarks, telling Mulligan, “I’m in awe of your talent . . . I really am. I’m also in awe of your voice, which is like warm caramel poured over the English language.
“I applaud your taste in material and how you hold out for stuff,” she said. “Even when you were young and didn’t have any money, you just did things that mattered.”
Streep continued by saying, “I can’t wait to see what Carey Mulligan will give us next, what new woman she’ll give birth to. I mean, in addition to the very beautiful and sweet smelling Evy Grace.”
Last week, Mulligan admitted that having Streep on set was a bit nerve-wracking. “Everyone’s very excited all day, all of the crew, all of the quite scary crew members who are sort of big, tough guys,” she said. “They are all very suddenly quite buzzy and excited.”
Suffragette opens in U.S. theaters on October 23.
