JASON STATHAM is about as hot as it’s possible to get right now, and the British action hero is cashing in big time in a new film backed by deep-pocketed Chinese investors.
Co-productions with Chinese companies are all the rage at the moment: the country’s rapidly growing middle class love their movies and the huge potential box office they bring has Chinese financiers more than ready to splash the cash on the right project.
Our Stath’ has teamed up with filmmaker Kurt Wimmer to star in an as-yet-unnamed action thriller as Brit ex-pat living in Hong Kong who encounters a high-level female Chinese agent and is coerced into helping to solve a kidnapping case that carries global implications.
Statham is producing the film alongside partner Steven Chasman (The Bank Job, The Transporter 1, 2 & 3) and they’re working with Chinese company Road Pictures.
“Jason and I both have been wanting to work with Kurt for a long time,” says Chasman.
“He has such an incredible vision for this film that this collaboration is particularly exciting for us. The narrative Kurt creates is incredibly rich and while our story is rooted in adventure, it is also very much character driven.”
Statham’s next release is Mechanic: Resurrection, which sees his return as Arthur Bishop and will be out on August 26 next year. Wimmer also wrote and produced the hotly anticipated Point Break reboot, which lands in the UK on February 12.
Jason is repped by CAA and Current Entertainment.
