Meet Mary Cruz from West London who moved to LA two years ago to pursue acting.
Was there a particular reason you chose LA?
There are just so many more opportunities in the US, it is so diverse and there are so many more media outlets than England. I starred in shows for the BBC, played leads in plays at the Cockpit Theatre, the Bloomsbury Theatre, The Coronet etc. I had done so many shows and so much performing in the UK that it was time to branch out into the rest of the world. Since being here I have acted in many shows for BET, Telemundo, NBC etc. and done lots of theatre. I have also been able to embark on more exciting projects. The commercials industry is also massive, I have been in commercials for Acer, Budweiser, Tecate and NarcAnon.
What do you miss most from home?
Home cooking, there is nothing like mum’s cooking… but seriously, the public transport. It is really difficult to get around in LA, you literally have to drive everywhere.
What was your first impression of LA and has it changed since? If so why?
There is just always so much happening here, there is so much work and opportunity. That is the vibe I got when I first moved here and it still is the case. It is a really exciting place to be and I feel very blessed to be able to have a career here.
What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus West London?
I would say mostly the weather and vibe. London is obviously slightly colder than LA and also I find that Londoners aren’t as inviting as Americans. People here are really friendly and will just casually make conversation when you do not even know them! The energy is just completely different.
Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?
Franklin and Co on Franklin Avenue do the best Whiskey Cake desert, it is literally the best desert I have ever had, make sure you check it out. Also, for entertainment, I love Cheetahs Hollywood, there are great performers and also a very cool, hipster energy there.
What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?
I would say come prepared knowing what you want to achieve. People tend to get lost here and forget what they actually came for, which is a shame, and time goes quickly so make sure you make it count.
Lots of our members join our group Brits in LA seeking out words of wisdom – what is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Preparation and determination is key. Yes, we all love the idea of glamour and partying but remember why you came here. I meet so many people that just lost sight of their goals, that is one of my fears, regretting not doing enough to fulfil my goals. Make every day count, make sure you do something significant to get you closer to your goal.
Lastly, how can we find out more about you? Are you working on anything at the moment?
I just recently wrapped two movies with Marcello Thedford and Trina McGee (known for Boy Meets World) they will be out this summer. I’m also set to star in another two in the fall which I am really excited about. Everything is up on my social media and website, so please stay in touch.
