Longtime local expat Sonny Newman passes at 79

British-born Sonny Newman, a long time Santa Monica resident and keen golfer, died in hospital this week after a short illness. He was 79.

Sonny emigrated from London to South Africa where he met his wife, Sylvia, who was working in Sonny’s father’s hat factory. They returned to England and briefly lived in Hounslow before moving to Santa Monica some 45 years ago.

Sonny, who was working as a salesman of nautical equipment until a short time before his death, was a regular customer at both Ye Olde King’s Head and, more recently Sonny Maclean’s.

Funeral details are still being decided.
