Brilliant news this past weekend as a show I act in called Break-a-hip just took home an Emmy for fellow British Actress Christina pickles – congrats to her, but I know there’s tons of buzz about the show. What is Break-a-Hip? It’s a short-form digital comedy show brought to you by the mind of esteemed theatre director Cameron Watson. The show also stars Peri Gilpin and Academy award winners Allison Janney and Octavia Spencer, which definitely helps bring eyes on it.
So what is a short form digital show? They used to be called web-series – but they got all fancy when web series started getting a bad rep. Usually, these are low-budget and labour-of-love vehicles. Hardly anyone gets paid, but it’s a great way to work on your craft and work with good people, hence the above. It’s also a great way for actors to become SAG-eligible. And now you can be Emmy nominated, which means all the hard work can be recognized and appreciated.
This week, a few fellow actors and I have started a Monday morning admin class where we get together and see how we can support each other in goal setting and making things happen for each other. Support is something that seems to be missing a lot in a town like this – there’s a lot of jealousy, secrecy and back-stabbing. But there is also plenty of good people willing to help and support. I first started this process about 18 years ago as part of the Beverly Hills Playhouse. You have worksheets to fill out each week so you can start monitoring your progress. Let me know if any of you are interesting in joining us. It’s free and takes an hour of your time.
THINGS TO DO
Loads of concerts have been happening recently – Erasure was here, as well as the double bill of Midge Ure and Paul Young. Florence and the Machine play this week and I’m very keen to see Lisa Stansfield next month – check out our newsletter for all the British acts gigging locally. And of course, don’t forget to start following us on instagram @britsinla, to keep up with all the giveaways we do each week.
There’s a wonderful one-man show called SWANSONG at the Skylight Theatre in Los Feliz, that is quite brilliant and definitely worth checking out. The Australian Theatre company were kind enough to host a special Brits in LA night there last Monday, where members mingled beforehand and enjoyed a cocktail sponsored by Silent Pools Gin.
Make sure you stay up to date on all of our events by following us on all social media and we look forward to seeing you at the breakfast club on Tuesday at Cecconi’s, 8764 Melrose Ave, West Hollywood. 9.30-11.30am
Cheers!
