Craving a Sunday Roast?

IT’S often taken as read that September can be the hottest month of the year here in Southern California, but instead of a heatwave we’ve enjoyed tepid temperatures hovering around 70 degrees, and cooler nights, especially down by the coast.

Inevitably for transplanted Brits, the advent of what John Keats memorably called ‘the season of mist and mellow fruitfulness’ has some of you jonesing for a proper Sunday Roast. I’ve canvassed our members and their local favorites for this classic British repast seem to be (in no particular order): Ye Olde Kings Head in Santa Monica; Wilshire Restaurant in Santa Monica; The Pikey in Hollywood; The Cat & Fiddle in Hollywood; The Village Idiot on 3rd Street; the Robin Hood Pub in Van Nuys, The Olde Ship (Santa Ana and Fullerton); the Cock & Bull in Venice, The Tam O’ Shanter in Glendale and the Pickwick Pub in Woodland Hills. If you’d like to bookmark it on your computer, I’ve created this handy

I created this handy interactive Google map so you can figure out which location is closest to you

October is also Breast Cancer awareness month. Each year, the Affordable Care Act entitles all women to one free well-woman exam each year. The cost is covered-in-full as a preventive benefit, which means it’s free even if you haven’t met your plan’s deductible. Women over 40 are encouraged get a mammogram annually too. So if you haven’t had yours yet now is the time to schedule it. I recently had one and was warned that it may hurt a little, but I took two ibruprofen half an hour before and barely felt a thing. Whilst many experts acknowledge that “mammography isn’t perfect,” and that it has limitations, they mostly agree that it sometimes doesn’t detect all breast cancers, and yes, sometimes women do have to come back for additional imaging, but it is still a good tool that’s been shown to reduce deaths from breast cancer.

Men and women should also be conducting a self examination on a regular basis. Breastcancer.org recommends once a month. Don’t panic if you feel a lump but get your GP to take a look as soon as possible.

Now is also the time to beat the winter rush and book your free appointment with the Gas Company to relight or check your pilot . Visit socalgas.com/schedule-service/pilot-relight. I know it seems strange to be thinking about the furnace with winter still a month or two off, but it can get quite parky by Thanksgiving, and then you’ll be glad you thought ahead.

Finally a recent Meet A Member subject, Fiona Goodwin, is staging a one-night-only production of A Very British Lesbian at the Santa Monica Playhouse on Sunday, October 21st. Fiona is a British comic and ranconteur, and according to the blurb from the theatre, the show features Fiona’s progress through ‘countless exorcisms, a lifetime of Jungian analysis, a starring role as Satan with a wandering troupe of missionaries in South America and dating countless beautiful but unavailable women and one very available but sweaty man’.
