It’s an argument that has long divided Doctor Who fans – who’s the best ever actor, or actress, to play the iconic Time Lord?
That debate is set to be settled at an upcoming live debate in Hollywood where an audience of fans will cast their votes after hearing arguments from a panel of experts.
Arena Cinelounge is to stage the special event on the evening of Sunday February 17 with our own Sandro Monetti, a keen Whovian who has met most of the Doctors, hosting.
It’s anyone’s guess who will win as opinion is clearly divided…
Using IMDB user rankings as the guide, Matt Smith comes out on top with the best reviews of any Doctor but his predecessor David Tennant has won most recent fan polls while older fans still retain affection for Tom Baker. But the increased ratings which have greeted Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor suggest the newest incarnation of the time traveler could triumph.
With clips, insight from insiders, audience members invited to state their opinions and prizes for whoever shows up in the best Doctor Who costume (optional), it should be a lively night celebrating the 56-year-old TV institution.
Among the on-stage guests is actor Nicholas Briggs, who provides the voice of both the Daleks and the Cybermen on the TV series. Patrick Troughton is his favourite Doctor.
Joining him, but keeping his choice secret for now, is Jason Haigh-Ellery, who as executive producer of Big Finish oversees the Doctor Who audio plays currently starring six of the Doctors and many of the favourite companions.
And Brits in LA member Harry Van Gorkum will be recreating on stage the audition which saw him shortlisted for the role of the Eighth Doctor.
Host Sandro Monetti said, “In weighing up their votes, the fans in the room will consider various factors, most likely including who had the role when they first started watching the show. But then they will hopefully come to their senses and realise that it has to be David Tennant, surely. Don’t blink.”
The debate at Arena Cinelounge on Sunset is the latest in a series following Who’s The Best James Bond (Sean Connery won that) and Who’s The Best Star Trek Captain (Patrick Stewart).
