Last Sunday I had the privilege to meet Senator Kamala Harris, who recently announced her candidacy for president of the United States in 2020.
Introducing myself as one of her ‘loyal British supporters’, I told the Senator “I’m backing you one hundred percent.”
The event was held at the sprawling Tudor-style home of lawyer and former LA district attorney Michael E. Kraut, who has been a staunch advocate for Harris during her rise in politics.
As Kraut introduced Harris, the crowd reacted with applause when he cleverly suggested, “This would be the first time she would be speaking from the west wing and the rose garden,” humorously referring to the rose garden at his Hollywood hills abode.
Harris delivered a powerful address, with her key message “Let’s speak truth,” about what is happening in America, resonating with the crowd of LA supporters.
Harris, a former California lawmaker and longtime prosecutor has been seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party even before she won a Senate seat in 2016. She received national attention as San Francisco district attorney before being elected California attorney general in 2010.
Her campaign is highlighting that career, citing her experience on issues like sexual assault, housing and college affordability. Some of her proposals include middle-class tax cuts, rent relief, immigration and criminal justice overhauls, and Medicare for all.
The first-term senator made the announcement running for the Democratic nomination for president on ABC’s Good Morning America back in January this year, becoming the third sitting senator to make her 2020 ambitions official.
“Truth, justice, decency, equality, freedom, democracy: these aren’t just words, they’re the values we as American cherish. And they’re all on the line now,” Harris said in her announcement video. “Let’s claim our future.”
“I love my country, and this is a moment in time that I feel a sense of responsibility to fight for the best of who we are,” Harris said.
When elected, Harris, the daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, would be the first woman president and the first woman of Asian or African American heritage to hold the White House.
Within 30 minutes of her announcement, Harris had received donations from individuals in all 50 states.
Other supporters at last Sunday’s event included, CEO & Founder of the world-famous Abbey, Restaurant, & Nightclub David Cooley, Film Producer Margret Raven, Sales Force, Senior Vice President and CMO Michael Peachey, and internationally renowned interior designer Gulla Jonsdottir.
