Meet Brad Lewis from Vancouver, who moved to LA to pursue an acting career.
Was There A Particular Reason You Chose L.A?
I’ve always been drawn to Los Angeles, it’s a powerfully attractive place. I love the aesthetics of the various forms of architecture, the beautiful beaches and cool hills. The look and style combined with the wild history and legends of the Sunset Strip make for a very specific feel that is unique to L.A and it’s very magnetic. Also, for pursuing a film acting career, Hollywood is the Emerald City, therefore no better place to gain entry into that dream factory than here. L.A is a fascinating town. It has a certain circus feel to me that I suppose comes with being a town full of performers – and I can identify with that. It’s nice, to quote the great Dr. Thompson, “to be just another freak in the freak kingdom”.
What Do You Miss Most From Home?
Being a sort of gypsy, I have three places that at one time or another I’ve called home. I’m originally from Vancouver, so the things I miss the most from there would be fresh wild salmon and the ski hills. My second home would have to be Israel, where I spent several winters and I’d have to say I miss wandering through the ancient streets and enjoying the vibrant mix of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures. And finally New York City, which has been my home for the last four years. I do miss the walkable nature of that city, as well as the amazing theater, nightlife and museum scenes.
What Was Your First Impression Of L.A?
My first impression was that people seemed more happy and friendly in general. I met people easily and they were more willing to help out then I expected. I believe the sunshine has something to do with it and the West Coast atmosphere. It’s a real contrast to New York, where everyone is rushing around like they’re getting ready to be shot out of a cannon. That opinion has not changed and I find that I’m also moving around in a more content and well-paced manner.
What Do You Find Is The Biggest Difference Living Here vs Vancouver/ NY?
The biggest or most significant difference would have to be the weather. My moods and overall health are particularly susceptible to cold, wet weather, especially in rainy Vancouver. I also find there’s so much more space in this city compared to most others and I love that too. It is fantastic to live in Southern California and the endless sunshine.
Do You Have A Hidden Gem In L.A That You Want To Share?
I found a beautiful movie theater called the Vintage Cinema Vista Theater in Los Feliz. I’m sure most people know about it but it felt like a special find. It’s an opera house style theater and it’s great to see they kept the original design. I also found a great traditional sushi spot in the valley. The fish is always fresh, delicious and cut professionally. It’s called Sushi Sazanami on Riverside and Coldwater Canyon. And finally, if you like good wine and an amazing staff who know all about the vine, there’s an atmospheric wine bar with a wonderful little kitchen called Mirabelle on Burbank Blvd.
What Would You Suggest To Others Who Are Considering Making The Move Here?
One important piece of advice is to try to have a real game plan for your career for when you arrive. Hit the ground running and use the new energy to make some positive moves, because this town can slow you down if you let it. So keep up the hustle. I was lucky in that I already had several friends and contacts here but if you don’t, I’d suggest doing workshops and classes in order to meet people and start building your network. And definitely stay in shape because again, this place can be real fun and it’s easy to fall off.
Lots Of Our Members Join Brits In L.A Seeking Out Words Of Wisdom- What Is The Best Piece Of Advice You”Ve Been Given?
A friend of mine who works as a casting director’s assistant filled me in on some of the usual stuff, things they typically look for: know your work, make strong character choices, be friendly and inviting. Basically be good, or be good at it. He also advised me to be proactive and reach out to casting directors, managers and agents. I have another friend who lives by the old saying that “the early bird gets the worm”, so get up and get on it!
Lastly How Can We Find Out More About You? Are You Working On Anything At The Moment?
I’m currently working to get cast in a film (fingers crossed). I’m also collaborating with a producer on an exciting part/idea for his upcoming project. I’m not really on social media, but you can find me on Facebook as Brad Belzberg and IMDB as Brad Lewis.
