Not all Brits in LA Members live in Los Angeles: in fact a fair number are scattered around the globe. Case in point: this week’s Meet a Member subject Nik Goldman, who lives in Leeds, Yorkshire.
Since you don’t live in Los Angeles how did you end up joining Brits in LA?
I spend a lot of time in LA due to being in the film business. As an actor and independent producer.
I joined Brits in LA, I think when it first started. It’s been one of the best groups out there. I recommend it to fellow Brits moving to LA or spending time there.
What are your impressions of LA?
I love LA. It’s one of the best cities out there. This is because you have the sun, the city (downtown), beaches, parks, and you’re two hours away from snow and mountains. I like the vibe of LA and the fact that there are so many British people living there, you feel like you’re at home, but with the good weather and much more opportunity. The Brits in LA gives an even better impression of LA, as it helps anyone fit in, no matter what their status or purpose is.
Do you think you could ever see yourself moving to LA, if not tell us what keeps you in Leeds?
Yes, I would move to LA in a heartbeat. This is because all my film contacts are there and it’s a better way of life. More opportunities in film and TV, and socially it’s the best. Film is a business in America, everywhere else, people look at it as a hobby. I come to LA as much as i can.
Do you have a hidden gem that you want to share with us?
I have a couple of favourite joints. One being La Descarga, a hidden away bar/club in East Hollywood.
Also I love Petit Trois, a hole in the wall French bistro on Highland. The burger is to die for!
Why would you recommend other overseas readers joining Brits in LA?
It’s the best platform out there when you move to LA or spend time in LA, for British people. It is an amazing resource both for business and socially. There is nothing out there like this group. The kind people who run Brits in LA, give their time and devotion to making the group what it is today. Without Brits in LA, it would make LA a more lonely place and lessen the opportunities for events, get togethers, and meeting like-minded people. It’s like being a in a private club where everyone is welcome. I would 110% recommend people to join Brits in LA. When you arrive in LA, do three things: get a rental car, a mobile phone plan and join Brits in LA!
We hear you have been working on an exciting project. Care to tell us more about it?
I’m working on a few projects right now. The two main ones are The Au Pair, a thriller by Eric Chambers, which I will be producing and acting in. I will also be producing and acting in a drama/thriller called Breckenridge, by fellow British director Lee Basannavar. Both of these are scheduled to be made soon. More info will be available on the internet and imdb.com
Lots of our members join our group Brits in LA seeking out words of wisdom – what is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Well from my pov as an actor and producer, if your’e moving to LA or spending a lot of time there it’s best making sure you’re well prepared for the pitfalls of a big city and city in which there is massive competition. Especially in the entertainment world. I was given advise of make sure you have a second source of income, especially if you’re acting. As if not, you’re going to be in for a big shock. Unless you get very lucky!
In a nutshell, best piece of advice is believe in your dreams, follow them, but do not be blind to reality. It’s survival of the fittest, and LA will swallow you up if you allow it to. Don’t allow it to do this, be patient, work hard and keep going. Never give up!
Lastly , how can we find you on the Internet?
