Meet Kate Osinska from Edinburgh, who moved to LA three years ago to pursue the American Dream.
Was there a particular reason you chose LA?
I moved here to start a company and was choosing between NYC and LA. Although I wouldn’t say that it was a hard choice, after years of sun deprivation in Scotland, LA seemed like the ideal place to settle in. Adding to that, I have big dreams, play the electric guitar, ride horses, and motorbikes, so California is really the ideal place for me.
What do you miss most from home?
I’ve been traveling the world ever since I was a teen. I’m a mixture of three different cultures: British, Polish, and Russian – as you’ve probably guessed from my surname. There are bits and pieces of each culture that I miss, and sometimes, believe it or not, I actually miss the rain and a good fish supper.
What was your first impression of LA, and has it changed since?
I visited LA before I decided to settle here. But I guess I just immediately fell in love with the ocean, the weather and the vastness of it. And I like the people here too. I’m an extrovert who smiles a lot, so I definitely fit in. Nothing has really changed since then, but that’s definitely a good thing.
What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus?
Edinburgh is just so beautifully green and I loved the fact that I could just walk anywhere I wanted in 15 minutess. Although in all honesty, I didn’t because it rained all the time. And of course, the sunshine. I swapped walking in 80mph winds in Scotland with rain hitting my face, to walks on the beach in California. It really doesn’t get better than that, at least for me. Actually, I completely forgot to mention the traffic, prior to living in LA I hardly ever experienced getting stuck in a three-hour traffic jam.
Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?
My favorite place is Laguna Beach. Most of you have probably been there, so I wouldn’t call it a hidden gem. It’s just a place where I can get lost.
What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making a move here?
Expect to be frustrated, scared, and happy at the same time when making that move. It’s a Molotov cocktail of strong emotions that come and go like the wind.
Lots of our members join our group Brits in LA seeking out words of wisdom – what is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Life is what you make of it!
Lastly, how can we find out more about you? Are you working on anything at the moment?
Work is really my biggest passion in life because of what I’m doing. I’m fascinated by humanity and deeply driven by a desire to serve and make the world a better place for future generations.
My mission to help one million people find Dream Careers was inspired by my childhood, watching my father being stuck in a dead-end job, and seeing the devastating effects it had on every single aspect of our lives. Vowing never to get stuck myself, I’ve traveled the world pursuing careers from law to finance only to realize that are billions of people like my father. I spent the last 10 years mastering the career matching process to finally get to this place. I want to give people a chance at a better life.
