Meet Michael Bhim from London who moved to LA three years ago to pursue Screenwriting.
Was there a particular reason you chose LA?
I chose LA because when I visited in 2015. I was just excited about the types of TV shows that were being made here. In the UK I was coming from an industry that was much smaller in comparison, so there was a limited diversity of subjects and genres that would make it to air. When I arrived in LA, you could find anything and everything – a screenwriter’s dream.
What do you miss most from home?
The obvious would be to say family, of course I miss family and friends. But I miss weird things, like the Tesco Metros or the cheap Costa coffees, British chocolate and sitting in a pub. There’s nothing pretty about the stuff I miss in London, but home is where the heart is, always.
What was your first impression of LA and has it changed since?
When I first arrived here I was amazed at how big LA was. Also I had the impression in my mind that I could get around the city without a car – wrong! The traffic also blew my mind. Now, I really appreciate how diverse this city is, the warm weather, and the feeling that everyone here has some level of creativity to them, whether it’s painting or writing or music. I’ve found LA to be an amazing place to find inspiration.
What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus London?
The weather is the first thing I’ll say is very different. Also there’s a feeling about being in LA that gives you a desire to follow your dreams because everyone is so ‘get up and go’.
Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?
Since this is LA it’s impossible for me to just name one place. When I like to watch the sunset with a nice cocktail, I love the Culver Hotel for a happy hour drink, it always feels like being on holiday. For a breakfast coffee and scone I always like visiting a lovely bakery/café called Gjusta in Venice, but go early before it gets busy.
What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?
I’d say, save as much money as you can because everything is expensive initially. Also try to stay in different places around the city so you really find the neighbourhood that suits your style.
Lots of our members join our group Brits in LA seeking out words of wisdom – what is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Be tenacious and passionate about what you’re here to achieve. LA is a place where anything is possible, but it takes more than just networking, always try to be the best at what you do.
Lastly, how can we find out more about you ? Are you working on anything at the moment?
I recently finished writing on a CW show called All American and have dipped my toes into the world of TV development. Find me on Twitter and Instagram @MikeBhim.
