Meet a Member: Mel Brown

Not all Brits in LA Members live in Los Angeles: in fact a fair number are scattered around the globe.

This week’s Meet a Member is Mel Brown, who lives in Brighton.

Since you don’t live in Los Angeles how did you end up joining Brits in LA?

Mel Brown on LA: what’s not to love?

Well this is an interesting story as I was actually the person who introduced Brits in LA founders Craig and Eileen in the first place. Both best friends I had known for over 25 years!  So some may say I was the matchmaker or maybe sperm to egg (!) as they created Brits In LA.  I could not be prouder of them and they remain two of my closest friends in the world.

Have you ever visited Los Angeles? If so we would love to hear your impression of the city.

Many times and I LOVE it.  Firstly I came over with a friend around 23 years ago, it was then I reconnected with Eileen and never looked back.  I love the weather, the lifestyle – everything really – what’s not to love?!?

Do you think you could ever see yourself moving to LA, if not tell us what keeps you in the UK?

It would be great to live in LA but my work keeps me in the UK. I run Impressive PR an entertainment company looking after actors, music artists, comedians, authors, live events and more.  I love it – but it means I can’t move out to LA permanently I just try and visit as much as I can which is usually at least twice a year.  My media contacts are all in the UK so anyone requiring PR here please get in touch!

Do you have a hidden gem that you want to share with us?

Well my favorite eatery is the 101 Diner but I hear it sadly closed –I have had many a delicious breakfast burrito there!  I also love the Alcove in Los Feliz.  If anyone happens to visit Brighton where I live then I cannot recommend @Issacs more highly – it’s fine dining with all local produce and wine – all the staff are really young and so dedicated and the chef is the oldest at 27!  Or in my village in Rottingdean a little French bistro called Bistro Gourmand, which is amazing, run by Frank who is French!

Would you recommend other overseas/ out of town readers joining Brits in LA?

Of course! It’s an amazing community of people – so supportive of each other. The weekly breakfasts are the best! Everyone is so friendly and it really can help people integrate into LA society

We hear you have been working on an exciting project. Care to tell us more about it?

YES I am working on the Funny Women Awards which has just gone global!  We are looking for entrants from LA and the surrounding areas and there is a heat planned for their stage award at the end of July.  To enter you just need to go to www.funnywomenawards.com.  Closing date is the end of this month, so hurry! There are several awards the Stage one is only one of them!  Past winners and nominees include London Hughes, Sarah Millican and Katherine Ryan.

Lots of our members join our group Brits in LA seeking out words of wisdom – what is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?   Experience the community to the full. Go to their events and weekly breakfasts – as a key member you are open to so many more exciting things too and you will also make lifelong friends – it’s the BEST!
