Meet a Member: Sally-Anne Ganley

Meet Sally-Anne (Ganley) from Bury (Greater Manchester) who moved to LA two years ago to pursue teaching High Schools students with the International Baccalaureate in Biology and Environmental Systems and Society, at the International School of Los Angeles.

Was there a particular reason you chose LA?

After living in the Middle East (UAE and Oman) for four years, it was time for a change of scenery. LA has a lot to offer such as live music and theatre, which are definitely a love of mine.

What do you miss most from home?

My family, pubs, long sunny summer evenings, cheap but good quality supermarket clothing (ASDA and Sainsbury’s) and the banter!

What was your first impression of LA and has it changed since?

Sally-Anne: she loves a good hike

Traffic was horrible! I guess it did change over Covid. But I understand why, who wouldn’t want to live here with such incredible weather! I also realized that no one was in any rush to go anywhere, especially when crossing the road. I also love the diversity here and openness from everyone living here.

What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus Bury/Middle East?

In Bury, people cannot stop discussing the weather in every conversation. From the Middle East it has to be the restrictions as a single woman. Also, the food, as they had some of the best shawarmas and biriyanis! I did love being more central to travel around the world and less worries in regards to visas (too much?!).

Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?

A favourite of mine has to be a small restaurant called Commonwealth. It is currently closed, but says it will open in March 2022. You will find delicious small plate/tapas style dining with a great wine pairing. Alternative to this, I also love Castaway in Burbank; especially for the stunning views, the food and, bottomless mimosas (if you visit for brunch!)

What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?

Being alone isn’t the same thing as being lonely, but it can be a little hard to make friends in LA. A lot of people have busy lives, so while waiting to find your peeps, try getting out in nature. There are plenty of wonderful hikes all over, especially in Malibu. Try podcasts; I love to listen to Happy Place. Exercise. I have joined a bootcamp which pushes me out of my comfort zone. Foster a dog. I currently have a foster pup called Hilton, he not only gets me out and about, but also meeting people in my neighborhood. Also look online for events taking place (such as Facebook and Meet ups), as there is always something going on! Preview unseen movies (Preview Free Movies). And finally, download the app 1iota; it’s a place you can get free tickets to shows. Before Covid, I went to watch James Corden, Jimmy Kimmel and Ellen, as well as going to the red-carpet event of The Irishman.

Lots of our members join our group Brits in LA seeking out words of wisdom – what is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Having healthy friendships are important. No competing, jealousy, gossip, or any other negativity. Learn to be a good friend and surround yourself with good people. Also, a struggle is an opportunity to showcase the strength of the mind, therefore never entertain the idea of giving up!

Lastly, how can we find out more about you? Are you working on anything at the moment?

I do have a site for tutoring with more information (sites.google.com/view/sagscience/home).

I designed the logo myself as I’m a huge bee fan! Or there is always Instagram (@saggaloo).
