Not all Brits in LA Members live in Los Angeles: in fact, a fair number are scattered around the globe.
This week’s Meet a member is Sharon Yates who lives in Spain.
Since you don’t live in Los Angeles how did you end up joining Brits in LA?
Well, I am Craig’s (founder of Brits in LA) sister and have spent many years going back and forth to LA and meeting lots of the Brits in LA members, especially at the Breakfast Club, I fell in love with Bernard Skibben, Mayor of Breakfast Club, he is the best!
What is your impression of LA?
I love LA, it has a great vibe and there is always something to do. Angelenos are very positive, super friendly and helpful, I think it’s because it is such a transient place – most people who are in LA are not from LA.
Do you think you could ever see yourself moving to LA, if not tell us what keeps you in Spain?
As I said I do love LA but where I live in Spain (Marbella) is very, very much like LA as in the environment, the weather, the mountains the Spanish language lol. It also has a lot of expats, it’s a very international place to live, with great restaurants, beaches, mountains, and people. And best of all it’s also only a couple of hours from my family in the UK.
Do you have a hidden gem or special place in the town where you live or where you are from that you want to share with us?
Yes, Caminito del Rey in Andalusia (www.caminitodelrey.info). The name means the king’s little path and it is a narrow walkway in the mountains originally built for workers at the hydroelectric power plants at Chorro Falls and Gaitaneje falls. It was built early in the 20th century into a sheer cliff face to provide the transportation of materials, and to help facilitate inspection and maintenance of the channel. The walkway is just 3ft wide and rises over 330 feet above water. It was once considered one of the most dangerous routes in the world but these days it has been carefully restored. The views are unforgettable.
Why would you recommend other overseas/ out of town readers joining Brits in LA?
Whenever I was there it was the go-to place to find out anything. Through Brits in LA I met some great people some of whom I am still very good friends with.
We hear you have been working on an exciting project. Care to tell us more about it?
Yes, I am working for Holborn Assets with British Expats all over the world helping them with their wealth management, like their UK pensions, investments, properties and now because of Brexit I am helping many of them obtain a European Golden Visa. This ensures that they don’t lose any of the European rights and have the freedom live, work and to travel visa free to 27 different countries.
Lots of our members join our group Brits in LA seeking out words of wisdom – what is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Well nobody gave me this advice, it’s something I read once and I just 100% believe it. “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.” – William Arthur Ward
