THERE’S only one real story in Britain this week and that of course is the Platinum Jubilee of our beloved Queen Elizabeth II.
Many Brits in LA members are will also be celebrating this historic event. I saw that a few people in our Facebook group were going to have a good old fashioned street party. Whilst we are not hosting an official event we know that many of the local British businesses are planning on marking this special occasion.
Ye Olde Kings Head in Santa Monica has planned four days of special events, including Jubilee afternoon tea, a Beatles tribute band and a pub party on their patio followed by British themed Karaoke.
Founding Sex Pistol Glen Matlock played with his old mate Gary Twinn and The Long Shadows at The Market Tavern (at the Farmers Market at The Grove) on Friday after press time – one can only assume they performed “God Save the Queen’ although “Anarchy in the U.K.” seems rather fitting too. Or pop along on Sunday for a bit of Karaoke and one of the best Sunday Roasts in town.
The Robin Hood British Pub in Burbank will be serving a Jubilee afternoon tea through till June 6 (robinhoodbritishpub.com). And the Yorkshire Square Brewery in Torrance will be hosting a free event on Saturday June 4th with live music, food specials including Platinum Pudding – the dessert created by Fortnum and Mason especially for the Queen’s Jubilee.
The British American Business Council (BABC) will be cohosting a Platinum Jubilee event with Britweek in July at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel and Bungalows in Santa Monica – visit this link for details (babcla.org).
For those of you who would rather stay home, you can still join in from afar and watch the UK celebrations on the telly courtesy of ABC, who will be streaming most of it live – Although I doubt they will be showing the episode of Eastenders during which the Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall make an appearance. (for those of you who have access to iPlayer it airs June 2nd on BBC 1).
The phenomenon that is June Gloom may be responsible for our grey mornings but it will never put a damper on the celebrations Los Angeles has planned for this month.
After a bit of a break, LA Pride is back – and it’s been split into a pair of parades and festivals in both Hollywood and West Hollywood. Each one takes over a separate weekend in June, so you thankfully won’t have to choose one over the other.
The LA Pride Parade, the long-running LGBTQ+ event produced by Christopher Street West that traces its history back to the 1970s, has moved east into Hollywood as of 2022 and will also host a ticketed festival on June 11th at L.A. State Historic Park. Christina Aguilera is headlining! The Hollywood parade is on June 12th and is a free event – visit lapride.org for details.
Meanwhile, back at the event’s familiar location from the past few decades, West Hollywood will stage its own inclusive festival, WeHo Pride, complete with a parade and a ticketed festival at West Hollywood Park from June 3-5. British artists Jessie J and Years & Years will be performing at the ticketed event OUTLOUD: Raising Voices. Visit pride.weho.org for more details.
Craig and I are planning to bring our Breakfast Club back very soon, so watch this space for details.
