Weather’s cooling down…but World Cup fever’s heating up!

It’s hard to believe that less than a month ago we were experiencing temperatures in the 90’s, sauntering around in summer clothing worrying if everyone cranking up their AC was going to cause the power to go out. But now it’s absolutely freezing – not quite, but almost. It did snow up in the mountains. Wrightwood, which is about a 90-minute drive from Hollywood apparently had over 4” of snow this week and if the weather stays like this they are hoping to open their skiing resort on November 19th.  Visit www.onthesnow.com for the lates updates.

The agony and the ecstasy: more ahead for England fans…

It’s been so long since we have had such a cold snap that I’ve almost forgotten how to dress for it. If this is your first winter in LA I highly recommend you invest in some thermals – that may sound a bit extreme but I can honestly say that you will be thanking me later.

Some of my M&S ones are still going strong after 25 years! They are not only more economical than splashing out on a winter wardrobe, but they also don’t take up much closet space. Which is handy considering they’re only needed for approximately 3 months of the year.

Marks and Spencer do ship to the USA now, although I believe you can get something comparable from places like Costco, Ross or Target.

Talking of which…Don’t forget to mark your calendars as Target are also launching a small selection of M&S Christmas chocolates and biscuits on November 16th. They are bound to sell out fast, as when they did when they recently started to carry Mr Kipling’s ‘exceedingly good cakes’; every time I checked they’ve always been out of stock. Probably a good thing, as otherwise I wouldn’t be able to fit in to my thermals from 20 odd years ago! Did any of you manage to actually buy them?

It’s only a few days until the World Cup starts! Always a fun time even if you are not a huge football fan. To be honest I don’t have high hopes for the England team this year but maybe they will surprise us all. They begin the tournament in the same group (B) as Wales, and that match will be on November 29th, but first they both have to play Iran and the USA on November 21st then switch opponents and go again on November 25th. This all falls over the week of Thanksgiving so although we are planning to host some viewing parties, due to that and the tricky time difference it’s unlikely we will do something for all of them – but we will post a list of any venues that will be open for the 2am and 5am matches just in case some of you do fancy it. Can’t forget the Welsh!

The art enthusiasts amongst you might be excited to hear that the L.A. Louver gallery are presenting their 23rd exhibition with renowned British artist David Hockney: 20 Flowers and Some Bigger Pictures. The opening reception is on November 16th, if you can’t make that you have until January 7th to visit.

Visit LALouver.com for full details, and make sure to check out their archives that show their exhibition history with Hockney that dates back to 1978.
