Savoring a proper Sunday roast

Craig Young gets to grips with some pukka British cooking in DTLA

With the recent closure of so many British establishments in LA – including The Village Idiot, The Pig &  Whistle, The Chap and the Market Tavern, it seems like British pubs might sadly be a dying breed in these parts. So I was very relieved to be invited to tour and savor a local new British venture with a twist. And I must say, my visit to BikeShed in downtown LA was quite the delight.

I was expecting to be greeted by a group of Hell’s Angels, but on the contrary owners Dutch and Vicky are more your Islington-gentrified types who boast Ewan McGregor and Gerard Butler as close rider friends. Moreover perhaps the most famous action star in the world – Tom Cruise – has been by for a meal or two.

“It’s a space for riders of all walks of life but mainly those that enjoy biking bit not the rebellious lifestyle associated with it,” as Dutch and Vicky put it.

The Sunday roast experience was nothing short of authentic, with the beef, chicken, and vegan nut roast all proving to be delectable choices. The vegan gravy was surprisingly rich in flavor, complementing the nut roast perfectly. As for desserts, the apple crumble with ice cream and the bread and butter pudding with custard were simply divine.

Get there early though as it’s very popular and likely to run out!

What truly sets BikeShed apart is its remarkable space – it’s a converted abandoned warehouse that has been thoughtfully curated. The central long bar, event space, and private members’ bar (reserved exclusively for riders) provide an eclectic atmosphere. The inclusion of a barbershop, clothing store, and even a tattoo parlor adds an intriguing touch. The variety of seating options, from stylish booths to high-top tables and comfortable couches, caters to different preferences. And let’s not forget the patio, an ideal spot to enjoy British beers on warm sunny days.

Admittedly, I had reservations about its location in the art district of downtown LA, but I must say, you needn’t venture elsewhere. BikeShed delivers an authentic British experience in a uniquely repurposed setting, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking both delectable cuisine and a distinct atmosphere.

I’m booking a haircut a tattoo and a Sunday roast for next week!!! See ya there
