Hugh Laurie recently proved that he is a talented musician as well as a gifted actor. The star of the popular television series House, M.D. played a selection of songs in front of a modest audience at a small bar in New Orleans.
This was Laurie’s first live public musical performance, which featured songs from his upcoming blues album called Let Them Talk. The multi-talented entertainer recorded the album, on which he sings lead vocals and plays the piano and guitar, at Ocean Studios in Los Angeles back in September of 2010. Laurie has stated that his musical aspirations have been a lifelong dream.
The Golden Globe winner said he is profoundly inspired by the emotionally charged musical ethos of New Orleans in an interview with The Guardian and professed: “I love this music as authentically as I know how.” However, the English celebrity openly acknowledged that he is not a genuine product of American music culture when said: “I was not born in Alabama in the 1890s. I’ve never eaten grits, cropped a share, or ridden a boxcar. I am a white, middle-class Englishman, openly trespassing on the music and myth of the American south. If that weren’t bad enough, I’m also an actor: one of those pampered ninnies who can’t find his way through an airport without a babysitter.”
Let Them Talk, which primarily consists of covers songs of his favorite blues tracks, goes on sale May 9th.
It is always inspirational to see someone realize a lifelong dream. Who knew Hugh wanted to sing the blues? Well done old chap, well done…
