Firstly I would like to start by saying how sad I am for the many friends I had at The News of the World . Wishing you all the very best in the future!
One film that media mogul Rupert Murdoch won’t be funding over at Fox Searchlight (I am sure) is the one currently in its early stages about the fallen ill-fated red top, which closed its doors this Sunday leaving at least 200 staff jobless.
Word has winged its way to me that a well-known production company in London has hired a bunch of top screenwriters to start work on a screenplay immediately. This is sure to raise a few eyebrows in Wapping!
I’m told that secret talks held over the weekend had top producers throwing out names such including James Mcavoy and Gillian Anderson to play the scandal-struck newspaper’s former editors Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks (née Wade) and Tom Wilkinson to play Murdoch. I’ve also heard Timothy Spall is on their wish list to play the portly former News of the World royal editor, Clive Goodman.
A close source revealed, “Yes, I can confirm that first drafts are being written as we speak and it’s a race as to who will get there first as I am sure there others working on scripts too.”
The insider added, “Much of this story still needs to unfold, the real drama is only just beginning with the arrests of Andy Couslon and Clive Goodman today. That’s the stuff we feel that people want to see. This is a huge story that even involves the British Prime Minister, David Cameron…it’s perfect for the big screen!”
Even several former News of the World staffers, (I’m told) have been approached to participate and, according to sources, are keen to assist the writers with getting the script as accurate as possible.
Though I am not convinced by some of the casting choices so far, this is obviously an explosive tale indeed. 168 years of news down the toilet within days… making this scandal the stuff of hit movies!
Watch this space for more updates and inside scoop on the proposed film’s progress… Oh, and if you call me for more info on this story just don’t leave a message, one never knows who might be listening in!
