According to reports Sacha Baron Cohen, best known to musical theatre fans for his part in Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd opposite Helena Bonham Carter, has joined the upcoming Les Miserables movie as Monsieur Thernardier.
It had been suggested recently that Geoffrey Rush was in talks to take the part – Rush did an excellent job playing Inspector Javert opposite Liam Neeson and Claire Danes in the 1998 movie adaptation, which is still one of my favorite films!
Cohen, whose recent roles include films such as Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan and Brüno, rounds off an all-star cast which includes Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe as Javert.
Les Miz will also see Cohen reuniting with Bonham Carter, who has signed on to play Madame Thenardier. Rumor has it that Glee actress Lea Michele vying for the part of Eponine.
To say that I am very excited about this one is an understatement… Go Sacha; Hollywood will make true thespian out of you yet!
