KATE Winslet took yet another gong last night as the British actress scooped the Golden Globe award for best actress in a mini series for her performance in HBO’s Mildred Pierce. Winslet was also nominated for her performance in Roman Polanski’s movie Carnage, but lost out to Meryl Streep for the Iron Lady.

Rising British actor Idris Elba also took home an award, that for Best Actor in a television miniseries, for his work in Luther.

Christopher Plummer made it a hat-trick of British wins when he got the nod for best support ingin gactor in film for his work as a gay man who comes out very late in life in Beginners, the critically-acclaimed drama that also starred Ewan McGregory.

The Globes are always replete with British accents, and what with Ricky Gervais hosting the show for a third time, the event – held at the Beverly Hilton – often had the feel of a BAFTA awards ceremony.

There was little surprise then when Downton Abbey, the hit drama about the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the Edwardian era, scooped the award for Best Television Mini Series. Accepting the award, the show’s creator, Julian Fellowes gushed: “How fabulous this is. The whole Downton adventure has been an extraordinary one. Like spotting a promising child and waking up to find they’ve have won the Olympics – and that’s what we’ve lived through.”
