STAGE: The Secret of Sherlock Holmes opens June 9th

A NEW PRODUCTION of The Secret of Sherlock Holmes, a play centered around the famous sleuth and described as ‘a funny, intense and disturbing  psychological thriller”, opens on June 9th at the Theatre Asylum, 6320 Santa Monica Blvd. in Los Angeles.

British actors John Mawson and Mario Vernazza team up with director Amir Korangy, head of the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London for  the past14 years, to present the show, which  plays a very limited engagement; Thursday, June 14th 10pm, Saturday June 16th at 4pm, Thurs. June 21st 7pm, Sat June 23rd 7pm and Sun June 24th 2:30pm.

Originally written in 1988, the play was revived in the UK in 2010 for a national tour, which transferred to London’s West End gaining excellent reviews. It puts the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson under the great detective’s own magnifying glass. Investigating their famous relationship, and their psychological duel with the master criminal Moriarty, it references many of the cases that Sherlock Holmes’ fans already know and will intrigue newcomers to discover more.

Originally a Merchant Navy ships captain and then VP for a large multinational shipping company, Mawson (Holmes) is a classically trained actor whose stage credits include “Inherit The Wind” starring Kevin Spacey, directed by Sir Trevor Nunn at London’s famous Old Vic. The original sound design and score from the 2010 UK production has been provided by the designer, Matthew Bugg.

Attendees of the June 9th preview can also attend the first night party at The Village Idiot, the popular gastropub located at 7383 Melrose Avenue. Your ticket gets you into the party. For tickets go to: www.theatreasylum-la.com.
