Most budding actors cite the likes of James Dean or Marlon Brando when studying their craft. Not Tom Hardy. The eccentric British star has revealed it’s Gary Oldman he looks up to.
Hardy and Oldman have already worked on several films together, including last year’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, as well as in the upcoming Batman epic, The Dark Knight Rises, and now the Prohibition-era bootlegging drama, Lawless in which Oldman plays a slick gangster-type opposite Hardy’s portrayal of country boy moonshine-runner, Forrest Bondurant.
Speaking on the red carpet at the film’s premiere at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival this week, Hardy said when he works opposite Oldman he finds himself watching and constantly staring at the veteran actor during takes, “I think he’s [Gary Oldman] basically God,”he said.
“I did nothing but glean from him.
“He’s one of my heroes, completely. When I watch him perform, I am transfixed by it. ”
Hardy also gave away a few of his behind-the-scene secrets on how he prepares for his hard man roles. “I play board games!” He said.
Known for playing a series of tough guys over the past few years, including notorious prison inmate Charles Bronson, the ex-pretty boy revealed: “I prepared for Lawless by playing Scrabble. It made me pretty tough because my co-star Jessica Chastain always beat me.”
“I also played Battleship with her.” He added.
Such…Tom-foolery?
