Scruffy British funnyman Russell Brand and popstar Katy Perry have officially reclaimed their single status. The ex-husband and wife finalized their divorce this week; just over six months after the British comedian surprised Perry by pulling the plug on their 14-month marriage, citing ‘irreconcilable differences.’A split agreement was hammered out in February, and Brand is believed to have walked away from their prenup-free marriage without asking for any of Perry’s $40 million-plus fortune.Their whirlwind romance that began when flirtatious Katy threw a plastic bottle at Russell’s head at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, they tied the knot in Oct. 23, 2010 at an elaborate, elephant-inclusive celebration in India.
However, rift rumors soon began with the speculation centering on career commitments and disagreements over family planning, Brand, 37, wanted to start a family, and Perry, 27, preferred to wait.
A source said: “Due to California law, it takes six months for a union to dissolve so things only became official today.”
Both have rebounded quickly from the fizzled romance. Russell, who told Ellen DeGeneres back in May that he still loves his former missus “as a human being,” has been seen with a variety of dark-haired model types, while Katy has been dating Florence + the Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd.
Perry was recently quoted saying: “My fairy tale has absolutely changed,” Perry explained to USA Today earlier this month. “I don’t need the Prince Charming to have my own happy ending. I can make the happy ending myself.”
